International Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship

The Hungarian Government is offering 100 scholarships to South African students to study at participating public university in Hungary.All courses available for South Africans are taught in English.

Eligibility

Eligible Programmes :
** The Stipendium Hungaricum is offered at the three levels of study Bachelor’s (30), Master’s (60) and PhD (10).
** Bachelor’s and Master’s applicants must apply for a course on this list to be considered for the scholarship.
** PhD candidates can apply for any field of study.
** Be a South African citizen in good health;

Have a strong academic record :
** Bachelor’s applicants require a minimum average of 70% in their NSC (excl LO);
** Postgraduate applications require a minimum of 65% in their previous studies
** An interest in studying in Hungary and demonstrated commitment to the development of South Africa;
** Available to study in Hungary from September 2019
** Meet the entry criteria for their selected programme in Hungary;
** Meet the minimum academic requirement for entry into a similar programme at a South African university.

Deadlines

** The application process will open from mid-November 2018 to 15 January 2019.
** All application forms with the supporting documents must be submitted on the Stipendium Hungaricum website by 15 January 2019.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to complete the online application on the Stipendium Hungaricum website, South African applicants must upload the following documents as part of the online application.

Any applications that do not comply with the below will be ineligible :
Applications for Bachelor’s programmes :
1. Copy of South African National Senior Certificate with a Bachelor’s pass OR a certificate of equivalence if a school leaving certificate.
2. A minimum of 70% average is required, excluding Life Orientation.
3. A maximum 1 page letter of motivation for the scholarship AND their choice of field of study.
4. Two reference letters, signed and on an official letterhead, with a contact number and email address.

Applications for Master’s programmes :
1. Copy of degree certificate(s), which must be a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with Honours, or a full qualification equivalent to South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 8.
2. A minimum of 65% average is required.
3. A maximum 1 page letter of motivation for the scholarship AND personal reasons for choosing the field of study.

Applications for PhD’s programmes :
1. Copy of degree certificates, which must include a Master’s degree, or full qualification equivalent to South African National Qualifications Framework level 9.
2. A minimum of 65% average is required for the Master’s degree.

** All documents uploaded must be clear and in PDF format no photographs of documents will be accepted.

Application Timeline

Application to the Sending Partners

** All applications shall also be submitted to the responsible authority of the Sending Partner.
** Each Sending Partner might have different deadlines and requirements for submitting the application material.

** Applicants are strongly advised to contact the responsible authority at their Sending Partner as soon as possible and inquire about the exact procedures.
** A nomination list, including a reserve list will be forwarded to Tempus Public Foundation by the Sending Partner until the end of February 2019.

Selection Procedure

First Round of Selection :
** The applications only saved but not submitted will be automatically rejected.
** The applications successfully submitted in Tempus Public Foundation’s online application surface are first checked.
** This is called a technical check and it is done by Tempus Public Foundation.

Second Round of Selection:
** The application materials of the nominated applicants are forwarded to the Host Institutions for professional evaluation.

** The institutions will also run a formal check first to see if all the documents submitted by the applicants meet the requirements of the Call for Applications and the minimum entry requirements of the study programmes.

As applicants can apply for up to two study programmes, the institutional examinations are conducted in two rounds.
1. First, the applications for the first selected study programmes are considered by the universities. The examination process for the first selected programmes can be expected from 18 March to 30 April 2019, however the dates are indicative.

2. Finally, the applications for the second selected study programmes are considered. The examination process for the second selected programmes can be expected from 18 March to 20 May 2019, however the dates are indicative.

Scholarship Provisions

Tuition-free education :
** exemption from the payment of tuition fee

Monthly stipend :
non-degree, bachelor, master and one-tier master level :
** monthly amount of HUF 40 460 (cca EUR 130) contribution to the living expenses in Hungary, for 12 months a year, until the completion of studies

doctoral level :
** Monthly amount of scholarship is HUF 140 000 (cca EUR 450) for the first phase of education (4 semesters)
** HUF 180 000 (cca EUR 580) for the second phase (4 semesters) – for 12 months a year, until completion of studies.

Accommodation contribution :
** free dormitory place or a contribution of HUF 40 000/month to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period

** Please note that if the student does not live in the dormitory, then the HUF 40 000/month is a contribution to that rental costs, and in bigger cities.

Medical insurance :
** Health care services according to the relevant Hungarian legislation and supplementary medical insurance for up to HUF 65 000 (cca EUR 205) a year/person.
