What is Milliman Opportunity Scholarship?

Milliman, a global leader in actuarial, risk management, and related technology and data solutions has established the Milliman Opportunity Scholarship program to assist students of ethnic groups who have historically been under-represented in the fields of actuarial science, data science, computer science, economics, and programming. The program is administered by Scholarship America®. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Deadline to apply is April 30, 2024.

Eligibility of Milliman Opportunity Scholarship

Applicants to the Milliman Opportunity Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

1. Belong to a qualified ethnic minority group as defined by Milliman:
** South Africa. Eligible candidates must have at least one birth parent who is a member of one of the following groups: Black or Coloured.
** United States and Canada. Eligible candidates must have at least one birth parent who is a member of one of the following groups: African descent, Latino/Hispanic, Native North American, or Pacific Islander.
** UK and Ireland. Eligible candidates must have at least one birth parent who is a member of one of the following groups: Black African, Black Caribbean, Irish Traveller or Gypsy.
** Australia. Eligible candidates must have at least one birth parent who is a member of one of the following groups: Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

2. Be living in, and attending a university in, the United States, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, South Africa or Australia.
3. Be a high academically achieving student.
4. Be a high school senior or a current postsecondary undergraduate. Students outside the United States must be in their final year of upper or higher secondary school or be current technical or university-level students.
5. Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited or bona fide college or university. In the United States, Canada, Ireland or the United Kingdom, the enrollment period is the entire 2024-2025 academic year. In South Africa or Australia, the enrollment period is the entire 2025 academic year.

6. Be majoring or intending to major in one of the following fields of study:
** Actuarial science
** Computer science
** Data analytics
** Data science
** Economics
** Finance
** Mathematics
** Programming
** Statistics

Required Materials:
As part of your application, you must upload the following:
** A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
** Note for United States students: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
** If any professional test scores are available, including but not limited to results from the SOA, CAS, ASSA and IFoA, include those as well.
** Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.

Awards of Milliman Opportunity Scholarship

Between ten (10) to twenty-five (25) awards of no less than US$ 5,000 will be granted. Awards are not renewable, however, students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Selection of Finalists & Recipients:
** Scholarship America will select scholarship finalists based on the applicant’s academic record and their response to three essay questions.
** From the pool of finalists, the Sponsor (Milliman Inc.) will select recipients. Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, and financial need, as noted in the student’s application, may be considered by the Sponsor in recipient selection. Provided there are qualified applicants, the diversity of the recipients will broadly reflect the diversity of the applicant pool.
** Preference will be given to past recipients. Any qualified 2023 recipients who apply as part of the 2024 program will be forwarded to the Sponsor for consideration.
** Not all applicants to the program will be selected. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification:
All applicants will be notified in late June.

Payment of Scholarships:
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Milliman. Payment is made payable to the school in August. Students outside the United States and Canada will receive funds via wire transfer. All recipients and their educational institutions must be eligible to receive funds from the United States per the Office of Foreign Assets Control, United States Department of the Treasury.
