Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Scholarships 2017 :

** Dr Sharlene Khan’s research focus on “Art on my Mind”
** Decolonial AestheSis and the Creative Methodologies of South African Women-of-colour looks to black-African-postcolonial feminist,

** critical race and decolonial paradigms that seek to decolonize Western aesthetics in the fields of contemporary visual arts,
** art history and art writing, particularly as it applies to creative theorization of South African creative practices, reception, scholarship and dissemination.

** ‘Decolonial aestheSis’, as expounded by Argentine semiotician Walter Mignolo, examines the field of creative cultural production – in this case visual arts and art history – and seeks to decolonize the European colonial-modernist perspectives that defines ‘aestheTics’ in relation to Western ‘high art’ and ‘fine arts’, but also serves to highlight, excavate and visibilise the wealth of creative production form ‘Others’.

** To this end, these scholarships will pay particular attention to work that seeks to question African art framings, that are in-depth creative theorization on local arts and which examines the creative working methodologies of South African women-of-color visual artists.

Scholarship Value :
MA scholarship (two years): R90 000 per annum.
PhD scholarship (three years): R 100 000 per annum.

** Candidates must be resident in Grahamstown for the duration of the fellowship.

** Applicants need to send a brief research proposal of no more than 3 pages (along with a primary and secondary bibliography listing major literary and artistic sources), a CV, academic record and motivation for the study to Dr S. Khan s.khan AT ru.ac.za

** Candidates will be shortlisted for a brief interview and must be available to commence study at the Rhodes University School of Fine Art in February 2017.
** Candidates must be resident in Grahamstown for the duration of the fellowship.
