What is NAC International Bursary?
The National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) is pleased to announce a call for International Bursary Applications for the 2025 academic year. The invitation is for UNDERGRADUATE and POST-GRADUATE studies in the disciplines of craft, dance, literature, multidiscipline, music, theatre, and visual arts. The grant will not exceed R250 000 per annum and is subject to Council approval. Applications must be submitted on or before Friday, 11 July 2025.
Eligibility of NAC International Bursary
** Only South African students are eligible to apply for funding.
** Students must be registered or accepted at an international tertiary institution for a full time post graduate arts related degree.
** The requested qualifications will be funded on academic merit. Students achieving less than a 65% average will not be considered.
** An average of 63% may be considered in exceptional cases. Each case will be reviewed on its own merit and no precedence shall be set.
** Recognition of prior learning qualification may also be considered upon acceptance of the student at a specific institution.
** The acceptance by specific international tertiary institutions shall be deemed sufficient.
** Preference will be given to students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
** Should the student be successful in his/her bursary application the beneficiary will be required to sign an agreement with the NAC.
** The beneficiary will be required to provide the NAC with a signed letter from the institution/supervisor as a progress report as and when the NAC requires one and on completion of the course; this report shall be submitted together with final results to the NAC.
** Students whose degree require two to three years of study (for example, MA and PhD) should not reapply for funding but would be given the grant for the duration of studies, subject to successful completion of each year of study.
** The NAC shall be entitled to terminate the agreement for the second semester/year if the progress of the beneficiary is deemed unsatisfactory on the basis the progress report written by the student’s supervisor
Benefits of NAC International Bursary
Applications will be assessed based on the applicant’s artistic merit, financial need, acceptance at the identified institution, credibility of the qualification they want to pursue as well as the prestige of the institution that they have been accepted at. The grant will not exceed R250 000 per annum and is subject to Council approval.
