DHET Ireland Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme

** The Embassy of Ireland in South Africa in partnership with the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Canon Collins Trust invites applications for scholarships for one-year Master’s degree study in Ireland commencing in September 2018.

Programme Outline

“This fellowship was set up in 2012 in honour of the late Professor Kader Asmal, who taught law at Trinity College Dublin for 27 years, specialising in human rights, labour, and international law. He co-founded the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement in 1963 and served as Chair until his return to South Africa in 1990.

** He was part of the ANC team that negotiated the transition to democracy. In 1994, he became Minister for Water Affairs and Forestry in the first ANC Government after the advent of democracy and served as Minister for Education from 1999 to 2004. He died in June 2011.”

Scholarship Available Fields

Scholarships are available for studies in the following fields :
The fellowship programme has two strands :
A) 13 annual awards for postgraduate study in:

1. Business Management :
** Economics, Accounting, and Human Resource Management Management and Business

B) One annual award will be made for a fellowship in :
** Human Rights Law (LLM in Law) at Trinity College Dublin. This will be selected by the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC).

Eligibility

Applicants must :
** be a South African citizen holding a South African Permanent Residence Permit
** have achieved the necessary standard to be accepted onto a postgraduate course in an institute of higher education in Ireland
** be seeking funding for a full-time postgraduate programme in one of the above listed subject areas
** be able to take up fellowship in the academic year 2017/2018
** Not have already applied for a course at an institution in Ireland – if you have already been admitted to a university you are not eligible
** Please note applicants already in possession of a Master’s degree are not eligible
** Please read the application guidelines carefully before applying.

What The Fellowship Offers

The Kader Asmal Fellowships will cover :
** university application fees
** tuition fees
** examination and other fees
** economy travel to and from your country of residence to Ireland;
** settling in allowance, book allowance and study allowance
** accommodation
** a monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover other living expense for you only and
** the costs of an entry clearance (student visitor visa) application

** The scholarship will open for applications on Tuesday 7 November 2017
** The closing date for applications is Tuesday 20 February 2018.
** Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in person in March 2018.
** Shortlisted applicants will be expected to immediately book for their IELTS exam on .ielts.org – to be written not later than April 2018.
** All applicants will know the stage 1 outcome of their application by March/April 2018 so that those selected, may proceed to the next stage and apply to the universities of their choice.
