DHET United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship

** The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is one of the largest and most prestigious international scholarship schemes in the world.

** The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC-UK) awards over 800 scholarships and fellowships for postgraduate study and professional development to Commonwealth citizens each year.

** The CSC aims to contribute to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, support excellence in UK higher education, and sustain the principles of the Commonwealth. Candidates are selected on the basis of merit and their potential to contribute to the needs of their home countries.

** Universities South Africa (USaf) is the Nominating Agency for South African citizens who wish to apply for the Commonwealth Scholarship tenable in the UK for the academic year 2018/19. Final selection of candidates and host institutions will be made by the UK Commission based on the nominations.

To apply for these scholarships, you must:
** Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
** Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
** Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2018

** By October 2018, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
** Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

PhD Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must :
** Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
** Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
** Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2018

** By October 2018, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
** NOT be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university before September/October 2018
** Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

Deadlines

** All applicants must have submitted their Electronic Application System (EAS) application by 22 February 2018. Subsequent to this one hard copy of the application form (with supporting documents, especially academic transcripts) should reach the South African Nominating Agency (USAf) by no later than Tuesday 27 February 2018.

** If applicants do not submit a hard copy of the application form, their applications would not be considered by the SA Selection Panel.*

Who can apply?

** Be a citizen and resident of South Africa.
** Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/ October 2018.
** By October 2018, hold an honours degree with at least upper second class (2:1)

** NOT be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university before September/October 2018 for those intending to study towards a PhD degree.
** Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.

Application Process

** Universities South Africa (USAf) is the Nominating Agency for South African citizens who wish to apply for the Commonwealth Scholarships tenable in the UK for the academic year commencing in September/October 2018.

The application process is two-fold :
1. All applicants for a Commonwealth Scholarship should use the Electronic Application System (EAS) , please visit Commonwealth Scholarship Commission Website and click on apply. Any candidate who has not submitted an application via the EAS cannot be considered for a scholarship.

2. One hard copy of the application form (with supporting documents, especially academic transcripts) should reach the South African Nominating Agency (USAf) by no later than Tuesday 27 February 2018.

Selection Process

** Each year, the CSC invites each nominating body to submit a specific number of nominations. The deadline for nominating bodies to submit nominations to the CSC is 22 March 2018.

** The CSC invites around three times more nominations than scholarships available – therefore, nominated candidates are not guaranteed to be awarded a scholarship. There are no quotas for scholarships for any individual country. Candidates nominated by national nominating agencies are in competition with those nominated by other nominating bodies, and the same standards will be applied to applications made through either channel.

Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria :
** Academic merit of the candidate
** Quality of the research proposal
** Potential impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country
