Helderberg Converting Foreign Driver’s License

If you have an international driver’s license and want to legally drive in South Africa, you can convert your foreign driving license to a South African (SA) one, if:
** you’ve obtained permanent SA residency, or
** you’ve obtained a foreign driving license while living abroad.

You have to convert your foreign driving license within 5 years from obtaining your permanent residency or resuming your residency. This is according to the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 of South Africa.

Documents Required

If you’re a South African citizen, you’ll need the following documents to convert your foreign driving licence to a South African one:
** South African identity document (ID).
** Passport.
** Foreign driving license.
** Traffic register number certificate or foreign ID if you don’t have a South African ID.
** Confirmation letter from your Embassy/Consulate in English confirming you do have a valid driver’s license

If you’re a permanent resident of SA, you’ll need the following documents to convert your foreign driving license to a SA one:
** Proof of permanent residency certificate.
** Passport.
** Foreign driving license.
** Confirmation letter from your Embassy/Consulate in English confirming you do have a valid driver’s license
** South African ID (if you’re in possession of one) or a Foreign ID (not a foreign passport or driving license).
** A Traffic register number certificate that was issued before permanent residency was granted may be used for identification purposes.

These original documents must be presented to the Driving license helpdesk of the Department of Transport for permission to convert a foreign driving license.

How To Apply?

You can apply for permission to convert a foreign driving license at the Department of Transport and Public Works (TPW) Driving License helpdesk. Please note that one must convert the foreign driving license to a SA one within 1 year of receiving the permanent residence permit.

With the above documentation, you have to go to 9 Dorp Street in Cape Town (It’s the department of Transport) (entrance to the building is in Loop street). Here you have to present the above documents and they will give you a letter. This letter was valid for 1 month. With the above mentioned documents, the newly obtained letter and passport pictures, you need to go to the traffic department in Goodwood. There you will do the eye test, submit the pictures and that was it. You will immediately receive a temporary driver’s license, and after 6-8 weeks receive a letter that you can collect your driver’s license.

These original documents must be presented to the driving license helpdesk of the Department of Transport for permission to convert a foreign driving license.Contact details
