SASSA Increase in Social Grants

New Grant Amount

The new maximum monthly amounts are as follows

Older Persons (60 – 74 yrs) R 1 860 R 1 890

The increases will be effected on 1 April 2021.

Payment Methods

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will pay the grant to you through one of the following methods

** cash at a specific pay point on a particular day
** electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
** an institution acting as administrator of the grant e.g. a welfare organisation.

Note : If you are unable to collect the money yourself, you can appoint a procurator at the SASSA office, or give someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf.

FAQs

1. When may your grant be reviewed?
Your grant may be reviewed when the social grant to which it is attached is reviewed.

2. What if your application is not approved?
** If your application is not approved, SASSA will inform you in writing why your application was unsuccessful.

** If you disagree with the decision, you can appeal to the Minister of Social Development. You must appeal within 90 days of being notified that your application was unsuccessful.

3. How long does it take?
** It may take up to three months to process your application.
** If your grant is approved, you will be paid from the date on which you applied.

4. How much does it cost?
The service is free.

5. How are payments for this grant going to be done?
Payment shall be done through direct deposit into your own Bank Account or Through cash transfer option which goes to the cell phone and can be cashed at the bank ATM of your choice.

Applicants who do not have a bank account will be able to select a bank of their choice between the following 4 banks to receive a cash transfer payment
*ABSA
*FNB
*NEDBANK
*STANDARD BANK

Where no choice is made as to how to receive the payment, SASSA will send the payment through the Post Office. All asylum seekers and special permit holders will be paid through the post office, where a personal appearance, with the revant documents will be required to prove identity before payment is affected.
