What is Michaelis School of Art Siyakhula Scholarship?

Michaelis School of Art Siyakhula Scholarship is provided by University of Cape Town. All Fine Art students who are either already registered at the Michaelis School of Art can apply for this scholarship. Only eligible and complete applications will be considered by the Siyakhula Scholarship committee. Last date of scholarship application is 14th February 2023.

Eligibility of Michaelis School of Art Siyakhula Scholarship

1. All Fine Art students who are either already registered at the Michaelis School of Art or have been accepted to study at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2023, and who are from historically disadvantaged backgrounds and are in financial need are eligible to apply for the Siyakhula Scholarship. The scholarships are aimed at postgraduate students at Honours and Master’s level.

2. Only in exceptional cases, will Fine Art undergraduate students in their 3rd year of study

3.Be considered by the selection committee for their 4th year of study. Such applications would need to be strongly supported by a staff member for consideration.

Value of the Siyakhula Scholarship

The value of the scholarship will be determined by the committee on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration the applicant’s circumstances and submitted budget (see Application Requirements).

As per UCT’s guidelines, the combined scholarships and funding held by the candidate during the year that they have been awarded Siyakhula funding may not exceed R 172 000 pa for Honours funding and R 230 000 pa for Master’s funding. In cases where the candidate gets awarded funds above this limit during their tenure as Siyakhula Scholarship holder, the Siyakhula committee will not pay out the second tranche of funds after the mid-year.

Tenure:
Honours degree: for the duration of an Honours degree (1 year)

Master’s Degree:
For the first year of Master’s degree, renewable for another year at the discretion of the Siyakhula Scholarship committee, subject to evidence of satisfactory academic progress in the first year of registration and availability of funds.

Funding will be paid as soon as possible after registration. The funding will be paid into the successful candidate’s fee account in the form of a student scholarship. After payment of fees, any credit will be paid into the candidate’s bank account.

The Siyakhula Selection Committee has the right to withhold or withdraw funding should the applicant not fully declare their income and financial circumstances.

How To Apply For Michaelis School of Art Siyakhula Scholarship?

Potential applicants must apply for the scholarship in writing. Written submissions must be supported by the following documentation

** A one page letter of application or motivation including an outline of the applicant’s financial circumstances
** A fully completed application form
** A detailed budget outlining funds needed, listing fees, material and production expenses and living costs
** A short biography of no more than 500 words
** A current curriculum vitae not exceeding 4 pages
** Academic transcripts – Non-UCT students will need to submit certified copies of the originals. UCT graduates can request the PGC&FO to source these from the system.
** Two letters of reference, at least one of which must be by an academic who has taught the candidate.
** The letters of reference must be submitted by referees directly to the Siyakhula Scholarship committee at the email siyakhulamichaelis@gmail.com.
** The Siyakhula Scholarship committee reserves the right to contact referees for further information. The Siyakhula Scholarship committee will not source referee reports on behalf of the applicant.
** Applicants are responsible for ensuring that the referee reports are sent directly to the committee at siyakhulamichaelis@gmail.com.
** PLEASE NOTE: Master’s students who have previously been awarded a a Siyakhula scholarship in their first year of study, need only provide a satisfactory supervisor’s report, indicating sufficient progress in their 1st year of study and their ability to proceed and register for their 2nd year of study.
** This could take the form of a brief email from the candidate’s supervisor’s to this effect, and sent to siyakhulamichaelis@gmail.com
** For first time applicants, please provide proof of registration or acceptance for study: a document from UCTs Department of Fine Art indicating that the applicant has been accepted, is likely to be accepted, or has been provisionally accepted for full-time study in 2023.
** It is important to note that applications submitted without the required supporting documents as specified above will not be considered.
