St.Catherine’s Scholarships and Merit Bursaries

Scholarships and merit bursaries are available in the high school phase of St Catherine’s School. Scholarships and merit bursaries are mutually exclusive. In other words, the recipient of a scholarship cannot apply for a merit bursary without relinquishing or forfeiting the scholarship.

Scholarships are awarded prior to the candidate enrolling in the high school and, subject to certain terms and conditions, remain in effect for up to five years. Merit bursaries are available to all pupils in the high school who excel in academic, sport or cultural fields and who do not already benefit from a scholarship. Merit bursaries are awarded annually and are only valid for one school year. Please refer to page 4 for more details on merit bursaries.

St.Catherine’s Scholarships

St Catherine’s School invites new entrants to the high school phase to apply for academic and sport scholarships. The number of scholarships available per intake is limited and meeting the minimum criteria is not a guarantee of a scholarship being awarded. The candidates will be ranked against one another and scholarships will be awarded to the top-ranked candidates in each category. Scholarships cover only the school tuition fees, i.e. boarding, bus fare, stationery, development levy, uniform, sporting equipment and sportswear etc. will not be discounted. Scholarship recipients do not qualify for any further discount.

Principal’s All-Round Scholarship (50% – 80%)

This scholarship is a discretionary scholarship awarded by the Principal to a pupil with
** excellent achievement in a combination of academic, sporting and/or cultural fields,
** evidence of leadership and service qualities, and
** the ability and willingness to support and contribute to the ethos of St Catherine’s School, giving of her time and talents to the school.

To be considered for the Principal’s all-round scholarship the candidate must:
** have furnished her 2022 Final Promotion School Report together with proof of her recent sport, cultural and/or leadership achievements,
** have passed the St Catherine’s entrance examination, and
** have written the academic scholarship examination (refer date, time and venue below).

If shortlisted, the candidate will be required to attend an interview with the Principal and the high school Head of Department. The scholarship would remain in effect for the pupil’s entire high school career so long as the pupil’s conduct and attitude are exemplary and the pupil maintains or enhances her level of achievement and commitment in the particular fields for which the scholarship was awarded.

Accordingly, should this not be the case, the scholarship will fall away in the following year. Once a scholarship has fallen away or been relinquished it may not be reinstated. Should the pupil successfully re-attain her prior levels of achievement in any field she will be eligible for a merit bursary in the subsequent year, in line with the merit bursary grid (see below).

Academic Scholarships (25% – 80%)

To be considered for an academic scholarship the candidate must:

** have obtained 75% or more in English Home Language and Mathematics in her 2022 Final Promotion School Report,
** have an overall academic average of 75% or more in her 2022 Final Promotion School Report,
** have passed the St Catherine’s entrance examination, and
** have written the academic scholarship examination.

Academic scholarships are awarded based on the results of the academic scholarship examination. The academic scholarship examination will take place on Thursday, 23 March 2023 at 14h30. This examination consists of two papers: English Home Language and Mathematics. The papers predominantly take into consideration the previous grade’s material and are skills-based rather than content-based. No formal preparation is necessary. The Principal reserves the right to hold a second scholarship examination at a later date for late applicants.

An academic scholarship will remain in effect so long as the pupil maintains an academic average of 75% or more in each school year. Accordingly, if the recipient of an academic scholarship does not achieve an academic average of at least 75% in any given year, the scholarship will fall away in the following year. Once a scholarship has fallen away or been relinquished it may not be reinstated. Should the pupil successfully re-attain her prior levels of achievement she will be eligible for a merit bursary in the subsequent year, in line with the merit bursary grid

Sport Scholarships (25% – 75%)

These scholarships are awarded based on evidence of achievement in sports that are offered at St Catherine’s School.

To be considered for a sport scholarship the candidate must:
** have participated enthusiastically in at least two sports offered at her present school,
** have competed at district level (or higher) in at least one of these sports,
** have furnished proof of her sporting achievements,
** have furnished her 2022 Final Promotion School Report, and
** have passed the St Catherine’s entrance examination.

If shortlisted, the candidate will be required to attend an interview with the Principal and the Sports Co-ordinator. The candidate’s academic performance will also be taken into consideration. The sport scholarship will remain in effect so long as the pupil continues to compete at the same level or higher. If the recipient of a sport scholarship does not maintain or improve her level of achievement in the given sport(s), the scholarship will fall away in the following year.

Once a scholarship has fallen away or been relinquished it may not be reinstated. Should the pupil successfully re-attain her prior levels of achievement she will be eligible for a merit bursary in the subsequent year, in line with the Merit bursary grid (see below).

St.Catherine’s Merit Bursaries

All St Catherine’s high school pupils who are not recipients of a scholarship are invited to apply for a merit bursary in January of each year. Merit bursaries are awarded annually and are valid for one calendar year only. Merit bursaries are awarded based on a standardised grid. Merit bursaries are awarded as a percentage of school tuition fees, depending on the level of achievement evidenced, up to a maximum of 100%. The merit bursary grid is displayed below for information purposes
