What is Northern Cape Provincial Transversal Bursary?

The Northern Cape Provincial Government is inviting RSA citizens, unemployed youth (18-35) from the Province, to apply for a bursary for full-time /part-time studies for undergraduate / first degree studies at any South African Higher Education Institution. Applications are welcomed and is open for Grade 12 learners current, completed and students who are already enrolled at a Higher Education Institution. Closing date is 17 November 2023.

Who Can Apply For Northern Cape Provincial Transversal Bursary?

** The financially needy applicants who are performing academically well.
** Those who completed Grade 12 and have been accepted for further studies at a registered Higher Education Institution.
** Enrolled students at accredited Higher Education Institutions who are excelling academically

Combined household income determines the sliding scale of maximum amounts the student may qualify for:

COMBINED HOUSEHOLD INCOME THRESHOLD MAXIMUM BURSARY AWARD
R0 – R350 000,00 per annum R100 000,00
R350 001,00 – R550 000 per annum R80 000,00
R550 001,00 – R750 000,00 per annum R60 000,00
Above R750 001,00 per annum R50 000,00

Recruitment & Selection of Northern Cape Transversal Bursary

The following criteria shall be applied in the selection process:
** Duly completed application as per OTP checklist
** South African citizen residing in the Northern Cape province
** Applied for studies and or already studying at registered HEI’s.
** Fields of study aligned to disciplines identified as scarce and critical within the province
** Demographic spread (Race, Gender, Age & Persons with Disabilities)
** Academic achievement of applicants
** Continuing students – statement of results
** Household Income / financial means
** Geographic location (District)

How To Apply For Northern Cape Provincial Transversal Bursary?

** Rural TVET Colleges

Successful students are expected to enter into a contractual agreement with the Northern Cape Provincial Government. The agreement contains all general provisions related to the bursary. The Northern Cape Provincial Government reserves the right to determine the total number of bursary allocations for the academic year based on the total budget available.

Checklist of Northern Cape Provincial Transversal Bursary

1. Certified copy of Identity Document
2. Certified copy of full academic record / results (matric / academic results from Institution of Higher Learning)
3. Certified proof of provisional (conditional) / final acceptance by Higher Education Institution
4. Proof of registration at Higher Education Institution
5. Certified proof of income of both parent(s) / guardian(s) / spouse
6. Latest 3-month bank statements of both parents / guardians / spouse
7. Child grants and pension slips should be confirmed by official documents from SASSA
8. In case where the parent (s) guardian (s) or spouse are unemployed, proof of such from the Department of Labour or an affidavit must be attached
9. Self-employed person must attach the latest Financial Statement and Tax Assessment
10. Letter from all registered banks confirming account details / status of both parents / guardians etc.
11. Certified Identity Document copy of the of the parent(s) / guardian(s) or spouse
12. Certified copy of the death certificate of the parent(s) / guardian(s) or spouse
13. Certified copy of the marriage certificate
14. If parents are divorced, a certified copy of the divorce decree must be attached
15. If the Applicant is an orphan or fostered child, authentic legal documents from SASSA, Social Development or the Department of Justice & Constitutional Development must be attached
16. In case of a single parent, proof of such from school principal or affidavit must be attached
17. The legally appointed guardian must submit the related documents issued by the court / magistrate stating that he /she is taking care of the child

What is the purpose Provincial Transversal Bursary?
There is no guarantee for employment. The purpose of the programme is to prepare unemployed youth for job readiness. However, for those interested in starting up their own business/ enterprise, they might be provided with support based upon their academic progress/ performance.

Empower youth that are financially and academically deserving students by providing them an opportunity to gain access to tertiary education and obtain a qualification through full time/distance learning at an accredited Higher Education Institution within South Africa

All the accredited Institutions of Higher Learning within South Africa

Will the bursary replace NSFAS?
Bursary does not replace any other funder but fund students outside of NSFAS realm.

No, the bursary covers Registration, Tuition, Prescribed material and Accommodation, which is directly payable
