Registering Your Vehicle :
** Registering your vehicle with the City proves you are the owner.
** You must register any vehicle within 21 days of ownership, no matter where you have bought it or received it from.

** You will be given a licence disc once you have registered your vehicle, unless there is an issue with your registration application, such as the roadworthy certificate has expired.

What is acceptable identification?
** RSA identity document or RSA passport (only if valid)
** Temporary identity document (only if not expired)
** Traffic Register Number certificate
** RSA driving licence card (only if not expired)

Where to register your vehicle over the counter
** You can register your motor vehicle at any of the City’s motor vehicle registration offices (MVR).
** You will find a tariff sheet on each individual page. Be sure to check the current tariff and bring enough cash to pay the tariff.

** See our handy map in the document download section to make sure you live within the City’s boundaries and should be using one of the City’s MVR offices.
** If you don’t, please contact your own municipality for your vehicle licensing and registration needs.

Apply to change your vehicle’s details :
** When you register your vehicle, you will provide certain information about your car.
** If any of these details change, such as the colour of your vehicle, or you if have exported your car to another country, you will need to notify the City and have the details changed.

** If you want to change the particulars of your vehicle (chassis number, colour etc.), you will have to contact the call centre on 0860 103 089, and they will advise you about what you require to notify the City about the changes.

When should I deregister my vehicle?
** You must apply to deregister your vehicle if it is no longer fit for public roads, or if it has been stolen.
** These are two separate processes.
** If your vehicle registration has not been renewed for four years, it will be automatically deregistered.

Register an imported vehicle :
** If you want to import a new or used vehicle from overseas or from a neighbouring country, you must register it with us, the City of Cape Town.
** The documents you will need to register an imported vehicle will be different, depending on whether you are registering the vehicle as an individual or a company.

Here are the steps on how to register and deregister your vehicle in Cape Town, South Africa:

Registering your vehicle:
There are two ways to register your vehicle in Cape Town:
Online:
Go to the City of Cape Town e-Services website at https://eservices.capetown.gov.za/.
Click on the “Register Vehicle” link.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
At a City of Cape Town traffic centre:
Go to any City of Cape Town traffic centre.
Bring the following documents:
Your vehicle’s registration certificate
Your vehicle’s insurance certificate
Your driver’s licence
Proof of residency
Fill out the registration form.
Pay the registration fee.

Deregistering your vehicle:
There are two ways to deregister your vehicle in Cape Town:
Online:
Go to the City of Cape Town e-Services website at https://eservices.capetown.gov.za/.
Click on the “Deregister Vehicle” link.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
At a City of Cape Town traffic centre:
Go to any City of Cape Town traffic centre.
Bring the following documents:
Your vehicle’s registration certificate
Proof of sale
Fill out the deregistration form.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when registering or deregistering your vehicle:
You must register your vehicle within 14 days of taking ownership of it.
You must deregister your vehicle within 14 days of selling it or scrapping it.
If you do not register or deregister your vehicle within the required time frame, you may be fined.

    I have just done change of ownership in Cape Town City for my car which I bought not so long ago.The licence disc was not issued pending a Roadworthy certificate.I move between Cape Town an PE most of the time. I need to find out whether I can do my car Roadworthy in Eastern Cape and get my lice disc?
