Justice Ismail Mahomed Law Reform Essay Competition

** Competition open for 2016 academic year.
** The Ismail Mahomed Law Reform Essay Competition, named in honour of the late Chief Justice, and former Chairperson of the South African Law Reform Commission, encourages critical legal writing by students, while generating new ideas for law reform.

** These ideas should be aligned to South Africa’s priorities as a developmental state and be aimed at keeping the law abreast of developments in society and in tune with the needs of South Africa’s diverse population and national policy priorities.

** Essays can be on any topic relating to the modernisation, improvement, development or reform of any aspect, area or branch of South African law.
** Entries should be in English and be between 4000 and 6000 words in length.
** The competition will be judged by a panel appointed by the South African Law Reform Commission.

** The winners and supervising lecturers, as well as runners-up, will be hosted at a function sponsored by the South African Law Reform Commission.
** The competition, which is divided into two categories, is open to LLB and LLM students respectively, registered at a South African University, in any year of study.
** Abbreviated versions of completed Masters dissertations will also be accepted.
** Ph.D students are not eligible to enter.

** The sponsor of the prize reserves the right to submit the winning essays for possible publication and to feature them on the Juta Law website.
** Essays received must be in the house style ordinarily required by the University Faculty, or the house style of the South African Law Journal.

** Entries must be submitted in English.
** The judges reserve the right not to award a prize if entries are not of a suitable standard.
** The decision of the judges is final.
