SOPH Doctoral Scholarships in Public Health

** Two (2) Doctoral Scholarships are available through the School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The successful candidates will take on full-time PhD studies working on a large intervention study funded by VLIR-UOS and FWO that is a collaboration between the SOPH, UWC and colleagues at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

** This study aims to develop and test – in a cluster randomized controlled trial – a household intervention to (1) stimulate HIV competence levels by creating a health enabling context, and thus (2) optimize the impact of CHW support on individual ART outcomes. We thus encourage students with an interest in designing behavioural interventions and in the study of family and family function to apply.

The project-linked PhD Scholars will among other things be required to :
** Complete a PhD study on a mutually agreed topic aligned to the larger study

** Support research activities for the larger study, including but not limited to: the review of literature, management of field data collection, analysis of study data and the preparation of academic journal articles

** Contribute to academic activities within the SoPH, including possibly some teaching.

Academic Criteria

Applicants must :
** Have achieved a Masters in any suitable field, such as health or social science (particularly family studies, social work or psychology)
** Have a strong academic record with evidence of research experience and peer-reviewed publications

** Candidates with experience and expertise in quantitative research methods are preferred
** Preference will also be given to South African citizens and Xhosa-speaking candidates.

** The Scholarship is initially tenable for one year starting latest May 1, 2018, and is valued, tax-free at a minimum of R200,000 per annum. Additional support for research expenses will also be made available to successful candidates. Renewal for a second, third and fourth year will be considered depending on satisfactory academic progress. Candidates will be required to register at UWC.

** Curriculum Vitae with contact information and certified copies of qualifications (If the highest qualification is not from a South African university then details of SAQA application need to be provided)

** Cover letter indicating why the applicant may be suitable for the position
** Evidence of publication record and writing skills
** Names and contact details of at least three referees

** Selection of short-listed candidates will be made by the Research Team at SoPH, UWC which is led by Dr Lucia Knight. UWC reserves the right to change the conditions of award or to make no award at all.
