ASSA/HartRAO/Cooke Astronomy Scholarship

** The purpose of the ASSA Scholarship is to encourage the study of astronomy. The Scholarship is available in support of 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate studies in astronomy (and, in exceptional cases, Honours), at a Southern African university.

Applications

** Applications for the 2018 ASSA, Cooke and HartRAO-ASSA Scholarships must be received by 2 February 2018. There is no standard application form. Please read the detailed information before making any queries or before applying. One application may be submitted for all three scholarships.

ASSA Scholarship Information

** The Astronomical Society of South Africa Scholarship for 2018 is announced.
** The purpose of the ASSA Scholarship is to encourage the study of astronomy.

** The Scholarship is available in support of 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate studies (and, in exceptional cases, Honours) in astronomy, at any Southern African university, including those which offer astronomy courses to part-time students in distance-learning mode.

** Criteria are a demonstrated interest in astronomy and a good academic record.
** Preference will be given to members of ASSA as well as to previous holders of the Scholarship who have made good progress in their studies.
** Preference will also be given to applicants who are not in receipt of other scholarships or similar funding.

** The scholarship will contribute towards academic fees and the cost of prescribed books, and is valid for one year.
** Payment of academic fees will be made directly to the university concerned.
** The scholarship shall be awarded based on an evaluation of the applications and the recommendations of the relevant university department.

** Applicants may be required to be interviewed at an ASSA Centre convenient to them.
** Applications must be submitted to the below no later than 2 February 2018.

HartRAO-ASSA Scholarships Information

** The Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory-Astronomical Society of South Africa (HartRAO-ASSA) Scholarships for 2018 are announced.

** The purpose of a HartRAO-ASSA Scholarship is to encourage current or intending undergraduates (i.e. 1st, 2nd or 3rd year) studying for a B.Sc. degree at a university in South Africa, who have an interest in astronomy, to prepare for furthering their interest. Applicants must be resident in South Africa.

** The maximum value of each HartRAO-ASSA Scholarship for 2018 is sixteen thousand rand, which is generously provided by HartRAO.
** Three quarters of the amount awarded is a contribution towards study fees; the balance will be paid be to the scholarship holder to assist with expenses and prescribed book purchases.

** On re-application, the holder will be considered for the HartRAO-ASSA Scholarship in future years, until completion of the B.Sc. degree, subject to good progress being made.
** Scholarship holders may be considered for vacation jobs at HartRAO.

Cooke Scholarship Information

** The purpose of the Cooke Scholarship is to encourage the study of astronomy.
** The Scholarship is available in support of 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate, and postgraduate, studies in astronomy, at any Southern African university, including those which offer astronomy courses to part-time students in distance-learning mode.

** Criteria are a demonstrated interest in astronomy and a good academic record. Preference will be given to previous holders of the Scholarship who have made good progress in their studies.
** Preference will also be given to applicants who are not in receipt of other scholarships or similar funding.
** The scholarship will contribute towards academic fees and the cost of prescribed books, and is valid for one year.

** A covering letter, outlining your career plans and explaining your interest in astronomy.
** Curriculum vitae.
** A statement of your intended course of study (full details of subjects and modules, and their costs) for 2018, and if possible and relevant, for the remaining years of undergraduate study.
** A statement that you either have no other bursary or scholarship, or where you do have a scholarship or bursary, the amount, source and conditions.
** A copy of your final official results from your previous year of study (this will be 2017, unless there are unusual circumstances).
** A recent letter of support from a lecturer.
** Additional recent letter(s) of support, if relevant.
** Full contact details, including e-mail, residential and postal addresses, and phone numbers.
