What is SASSA Social Relief of Distress Grant?

The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is meant for South African Citizens, Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders who are between the ages of 18 and 60 years, who have insufficient means, who do not receive social grants on behalf of herself/ himself or who are not contributing to or eligible for UIF payment, and have no financial support from any other source.

How To Check SASSA COVID-19 SRD R350 Grant Reconsideration Status?

SASSA COVID-19 SRD R350 Grant Reconsideration processing for the period May 2020 to March 2022 has been completed and no new applications will be considered for this period.

Step-1 : Go to the link https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/reconsideration
Step-2 : Enter the South African ID Number
Step-3 : Enter the Phone Number used to submit your application
Step-4 : Click on Send Pin button

Payment of SASSA Grants

Social grant payments through bank ATMs and retail outlets:
Confirmation was received from Banking Association of South Africa (BASA) that banks are ready for the payment cycle. ATMs will be restocked in time for the payment cycle which starts on 30 March. Banks will also carry messaging reminding customers of priority for older persons and persons with disability.

Retail outlets have confirmed readiness. List of high volume stores just received and will be shared with NATJOC to assist SANDF and SAPS with support planning. Retailers confirmed their own containment measures:

Social grant payments at cash pay points:
** SASSA will deploy at least one manager to each pay point to assist with queue management and to attend to enquiries – staff will have protective gear (masks and gloves) and carry hand sanitizer
** SAPO has committed to having hand sanitizer for all clients – will be sanitized just prior to joining short queue for payment
** Access to pay points will be limited to control social distancing
** SAPO staff to be equipped with masks and gloves
** Security staff will be equipped with masks and gloves
** PostBank call centre (available 24/7) on 0800 53 54 55 to deal with concerns and complaints related to SASSA/SAPO cards – card replacement, PIN resets and non-payment

Features of SASSA COVID-19 SRD R350 Grant

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) introduced the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 Grant as a temporary social assistance measure to provide financial relief to vulnerable individuals who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The features of the SASSA COVID-19 SRD R350 Grant include:

Eligibility Criteria:
The grant was available to South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees who were unemployed, did not receive any other form of income or social grant, and were not receiving unemployment insurance benefits.

Payment Amount:
The grant provided a monthly payment of R350 (South African Rand) per eligible beneficiary.

Duration:
The grant was initially introduced as a temporary measure in May 2020, and has been extended in phases by the South African government in response to the evolving COVID-19 situation.

Application Process:
Eligible individuals were required to apply for the grant through an online portal or via WhatsApp. The application process included providing personal and financial information, and supporting documentation to verify eligibility.

The grant was paid electronically through various channels, including bank transfers, e-wallets, or cash withdrawals from designated payment points.

Additional Simplified Procedure

There are two ways to check your SASSA COVID-19 SRD R350 grant reconsideration status

Online:
1. Go to the SASSA website: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/.
2. Click on the “Reconsideration Status” tab.
3. Enter your ID number and cellphone number.
4. Click on the “Submit” button.

SMS:
1. Send an SMS to 32546 with the following format: * R350 <space> ID number
2. Example: R350 7895645234

You will receive an SMS with the status of your reconsideration application.

Here are some of the possible statuses you may receive:
** Approved: Your application has been approved and you will start receiving payments.
** Declined: Your application has been declined and you will not receive payments.
** Pending: Your application is still being processed and you will be notified of the outcome as soon as it is available.
** Not Found: Your application was not found in the system. Please check your ID number and cellphone number and try again.
