How To Apply For Admission Through CAO?

** Apply and pay the administration fee online at www.cao.ac.za and once the administration fee has been cleared, your application will be made available to the institution/s to which you have applied on the next business day.


** When you apply online and then pay via EasyPay, your application will be made available to institutions the next business day after your funds have been cleared.
** If you apply by submitting a hard copy application form and you pay the administration fee, your application takes at least two weeks after we receive your application form and payment before it is available to the institution/s to which you have applied.
** Complete and submit your online application as soon as possible on our website (www.cao.ac.za).
** The CAO processes applications for member institutions from 01 March for the following years January (First Semester) intake.
** The CAO processes applications for member institutions that have a Second Semester intake from 01 August for the following year’s July (Second Semester) intake.
** For TVET College applications, contact the TVET college directly.

Documents Required For CAO Admission Application

(a) Current Grade 12s: ID, Final Grade 11 Progress Report, (when applying), PLUS Mid-Term/ June Grade 12 and September/ Grade 12 Trial results as soon as they become available.
(b) Applicants who have already passed Grade 12 and have not studied at another post school institution: ID.
(c) Applicants who have already passed Grade 12 and have studied at another post school institution: ID, full academic record.
(d) Applicants who wish to study at a private college offering FET programmes: ID, copy of highest qualification achieved.
(e) If you have upgraded one or more of your subjects, send us a certified copy of your combined statement/ certificate of results.
(f) Please note: Some institutions may request additional documents.
(g) If you have already written the Final Grade 12 NSC examinations, your results will be downloaded directly from the Department of Basic Education database. This applies for public schools, Independent Examinations Board (IEB) and South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) examinations, i.e. certified by UMALUSI.
(h) If you don’t have a copy of your ID, you must provide your ID number and submit a certified copy of your ID as soon as you receive it.

How To Upload Documents At CAO Portal?

In order to login to upload your documents, you must have the following:
1. CAO/ID Number AND
2. Cellphone (with cell number entered on your application) OR
3. Access to your email (which was entered on your application)

Note:
AND you must have your documents saved in a file on your computer or on a memory stick/flash drive.

How To Pay Application Fee At CAO?

All payments to the CAO are done through EasyPay or online at www.cao.ac.za. Click on ‘Payments’ and follow the instructions. Card payments can also be made at the CAO’s office. The CAO office does not accept cash. See fee structure on page 24. Payments must be made to the correct CAO number. Once you have paid for an application, we cannot transfer the funds from one application to the next.

Available Programmes

A. On this Website
1. Click on the “Programme list” option on the left navigation bar
2. Use the filters to search for programmes by institution, exam type, working personality or career direction OR
3. Enter the specific programme name or code if you know it

B. In our Handbook:
1. The programme choice list is divided according to career directions.

2. Career directions are divided into two sections:
(a) The first with the BLUE heading contains programmes at universities and universities of technology and
(b) The second with the ORANGE heading contains programmes at private colleges
(c) To find a programme, look up the field of study, for example, Sport, in the Index (pages 210 to 214) and then go directly to the page/s specified. Programmes are grouped according to the level of study within each career direction.

The different levels of study are:
** Shorter course study
** NC(V) study
** Nated Certificate & Diploma study (Report 191 Programmes)
** Certificate study
** Diploma study
** Degree study
** B Tech/M Tech study (programmes for people with a diploma or a degree)

If you are looking for postgraduate study, consult the institution for courses that are not included on this website or in this Handbook. You will also find some shorter courses and programmes for people who are already working as educators or nurses.

Additional Simplified Procedure

To apply for admission through the Central Applications Office (CAO) in South Africa, you will need to follow these steps:

1. Go to the CAO website: https://www.cao.ac.za/
2. Click on the “Apply” tab.
3. Create an account and log in.
4. Select the year and term you want to apply for.
5. Select the programmes you want to apply for.
6. Pay the application fee.
7. Upload your supporting documents.
8. Submit your application.

The CAO application fee for South African citizens is R250. For international applicants, the fee is USD100. The supporting documents you need to upload will vary depending on the programme you are applying for.

However, you will typically need to upload your:
** Grade 12 results
** ID card or passport
** Transcripts of any previous tertiary studies
** Proof of English language proficiency (if required)

The CAO application deadline for 2024 entry is 30 September 2023. However, it is advisable to apply early as places are limited.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when applying through the CAO:
** You can only apply for one programme per institution.
** You can apply for a maximum of five programmes.
** You can only apply for programmes that are offered by CAO member institutions.
** You will be notified of the outcome of your application by the end of January 2024.
