Mandela Institute LLM Bursary

** Bursaries available for LLM students registered at Wits School of Law
** The bursaries have been generously provided by Mandela Institute, School of Law in memory of Nelson R Mandela.

** The bursaries are in recognition of the desire of Mandela to see South Africa and Africa generally develop skills and expertise to engage with the global system to promote socio-economic development.
** In his 2002 letter of support, he noted that “South Africans understand that economic stability and growth are necessary conditions for the success of freedom and democracy.

** But the world economy is an unforgiving place, one in which the international good will generated by democratisation provides increasingly limited returns if not accompanied by necessary economic transformation.
** If developing countries, and those in transition, do not equip themselves to compete in the global economy, their democratic systems will be imperiled as they are bypassed by the winds of investment and economic progress.”

** Two bursaries up to the value of R90 000 are available to provide for tuition fees only to LLM students in areas broadly related to trade and international economic law, commercial and business law, investment law, and energy law and sustainability.

** The scholarship will be awarded to the most suitably qualified applicant taking into account academic ability, financial need, and relevance of research interests to the Mandela Institute research areas mentioned above.

Application Process :
Interested applicants must provide the following :
** A letter of motivation (1 page maximum), which indicates why you are applying for
** the scholarship and why you think you, should be awarded the scholarship, including

** your research interests.
** You will be required to offer five (5) hours research assistance per week to the
** Mandela Institute.

** Full financial details including statement of income, financial aid, other scholarships,
** or bursaries that you have received for 2017.
** Confirmation of full-time LLM registration or accepted admission letter.

** An abridged curriculum vitae (less than 2 pages) that includes the following information
** full name, Wits student number, contact details (cell number and e-mail address) and your date of birth
** A certified copy of your undergraduate academic results

** A certified copy of your ID or study permit
** Two (2) letters of reference, and
** Any other factor which might be relevant
