Results of the Municipal By-Elections

** The African National Congress and Democratic Alliance retained two seats each, whereas an independent candidate won one seat during the by-elections contested yesterday in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape provinces.

** The results saw both parties retaining the wards they won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, furthermore an independent candidate won a seat previously held by the African National Congress.

** Voter turnout varied in the by-elections between 28.64% and 66.25% with an average of 38.76%.

** The new councillor for Newcastle Municipality is Prince Blessing Mwali in Ward 23 in the Newcastle Municipality – KZN252.
** The independent candidate won the seat with 43.08% of the 2 272 votes cast. Voter turnout was 44.01%.

The new councillors for the African National Congress are :
Xola Chuma Mndela in Ward :
** 3 in the uMziwabantu Municipality – KZN214.
** The seat was retained by the party with 75.69% of the 1 879 votes cast.
** Voter turnout was 32.78%.

Lucky Steven Nyathi in Ward :
** 1 in the Victor Khanye Municipality – MP311.
** The seat was retained by the party with 57.07% of the 1 490 votes cast.
** Voter turnout was 42.69%.

The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance are :
Elleanor Anne Huggett in Ward :
** 73 in the City of Johannesburg – JHB.
** The seat was retained by the party with 84.37% of the 4 346 votes cast.
** Voter turnout was 28.64%

David John Swart in Ward :
** 2 in the Bitou Municipality – WC047.
** The seat was retained by the party with 86.33% of the 3 543 votes cast.
** Voter turnout was 66.25%.
